An Exploration of Caregiving in the U.S.

Topic:

In this seminar, we will explore the state of caregiving in the US. Think about the types of individuals who might need caregiving services (Ex: individuals with Alzheimer’s, autism, mental illness, etc.), how much care they may need (Ex: assisted living, nursing home, hospice, adult day care, etc.), and the costs associated with that care (Ex: self-pay, waivers, Medicaid, etc.).

Readings:

  1. Caregiving in the U.S. from AARP

  2. What happens to developmentally disabled as parents age, die? by Jen Fifield

  3. The True Cost of Caregiving by Dyvonne Body (Pg. 22 & Illustrations)

  4. Caregiving in the U.S. 2020 from the National Alliance for Caregiving

Discussion Questions:

  1. Has your immediate family needed a caregiver, either formally or informally?

  2. Who will take care of your parents when they can no longer care for themselves?

  3. What role should the government play in providing caregiving services?

  4. How do you want to live the end of your life?

  5. How can business provide value in the caregiving space?
